How quality improvement interventions can address disparities in depression
Robert E. Kristofco, Nancy M. Lorenzi
A b s t r a c t
The quality of depression care, especially care received by minorities, needs improvement. Several interventions
have been developed for the purpose of improving the quality of depression management in primary care, including
quality improvement strategies employing disease management approaches, the chronic care model, and the
Breakthrough Collaborative Series developed by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement. This article reviews
these interventions and examines their potential to contribute to the improvement of depression care.
Lessons for Practice
- Advances that could improve depression care for the general population and for ethnic and racial minorities are not incorporated in usual care.
- A variety of interventions have been shown to improve health care in general and depression care in particular for both the general population and ethnic and racial minorities.
- The Breakthrough Series Collaborative approach developed by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement combines elements of successful interventions and shows promise for addressing issues in disparities in depression care.
- CME professionals can contribute expertise and skills to educational planning in the Breakthrough Series Collaborative approach or other interventions that have demonstrated success in improving mental health outcomes for ethnic and racial minorities.
