Guidelines implementation: Transforming physician/patient interaction through stages of change

A b s t r a c t

Primary care physicians frequently report feeling pressured to implement evidence-based clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) for cardiovascular risk reduction in diabetic patients rapidly. Although there is some research and interventions have been suggested to address some of the systemic and contextual issues to encourage implementation of CPGs, little attention has been paid to the influence of doctor-patient interaction, especially as it influences patient nonadherence to best-practice treatment.
