Robyn L. Houlden, MD, FRCPC
Christine P. Collier, PhD, FCACB

Formulating learning outcome objectives that clearly define the desired outcomes of a learning experience should be one of the first steps in both group and personal continuing medical education (CME) learning, and should be linked with all aspects of evaluation. This article highlights how to derive learning outcome objectives that address a variety of traditional and nontraditional CME outcomes from the perspectives of the learner and the CME provider. It also reviews how to write concise, clear objectives, outlines their role in enhancing learning, and provides practical tips on using them effectively.
