Role of Self-Assessment in Identification of Learning Needs
John Parboosingh, MB, FRCOG, FRCSC

A b s t r a c t

Physicians gauge their competence by appraising their management of patients and problems and by using standardized self-assessment programs. Both processes provide them with learning opportunities, although studies suggest that self-appraisal of practice performance more often leads to commitment to change practice than participation in self-assessment programs. Self-assessment programs will be used increasingly by health professionals as emerging technologies enable practice-based competencies to be tested in a confidential and supportive environment. Physicians facing pressures to keep up with advances in health care will look to continuing education professionals to help them create learning opportunities from self-assessed needs.
