INNOVATIONS IN CONTINUING EDUCATION

Shannon, PhD A b s t r a c t Self-directed, lifelong learning based on personal experience is an acknowledged, important part of the continuous learning required by practicing physicians to maintain their competence over a lifetime of practice. Creating opportunities to facilitate the process of self-directed learning for practicing physicians is the mandate of continuing medical education (CME) providers. Developing programs that are practice relevant, readily accessible, and easy to use is a challenge for CME research and development. This paper describes a randomized trial of a video/workbook educational program designed for individual use on the learning of three types of family physicians. Results show that there was a significant increase in the knowledge of the physicians who participated in the program as compared to controls and that study physicians found the program easy to use and an acceptable way to learn.
