History of the Society of Medical College Directors of Continuing Medical Education (SMCDCME): The First Twelve Years, 1976–1988
Richard M. Caplan, MD

A b s t r a c t

The Society of Medical College Directors of Continuing Medical Education (SMCDCME) came into existence on April 2, 1976. This review derives from memories of the author and some other past-presidents of the organization plus information from remaining documents. It recounts how societal forces, acting upon medical college CME directors and their parent institutions, prompted the formal organization of the group. Major activities and themes are described that occupied the organization during its first 12 years of challenge and accomplishment.
