Developing Guidelines for Guest Faculty Honoraria: Case Study
R. Van Harrison, PhD

The majority of medical schools have not formalized guidelines for honoraria for guest faculty making presentations at their educational activities. Two factors are stimulating the development of guidelines: new national standards regarding financial support from commercial companies for CME activities and federal audits of university operations. In 1993, the University of Michigan Medical School produced guidelines for guest faculty making any educational presentation, including internally and externally oriented CME activities. This article describes their development. The process involved collecting data concerning current practices at the University of Michigan Medical School, at other medical schools, and at other professional schools at the University of Michigan. The guidelines present norms for a typical situation and factors for variation from that norm. These guidelines and the procedure used to develop them provide a model for other medical schools to follow in developing their own institutional guidelines.
