Quality Academy: Quality Management Education in a Multifacility Health Care Organization
M. Jo MacDonald, MS
A b s t r a c t
Health care reform efforts are focusing on the responsibility of clinicians and administrators
to combine controlling costs with improving the quality of health care. This article
describes how Veterans Health Administration (VHA) has approached this responsibility to
provide cost-effective and quality health care services to veterans. To reduce the difficulties
arising from the wide geographic distribution of VHA facilities and the limited funds for system-wide
training, the Quality Management Institute and Education Center (QMI) located at the
Veteran Affairs (VA) Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina, created the Quality Academy,
a distance learning experience. A brief summary of the process and progress of the Quality
Academy is included.
