ORIGINAL ARTICLE

Continuing Medical Education and Quality Management: Emerging Relationship
Nancy L. Bennett, PhD

A b s t r a c t

A variety of management systems have been used in health care in the past to look systematically for problems and find their solutions. Quality management (QM) systems and continuing medical education (CME) are two stakeholders in health care that focus on making changes. The relationship between QM systems and CME holds great promise and is beginning to take shape. QM systems and CM, although similar in many ways, have not yet identified those interfaces that will create a truly synergistic relationship. One common theme, however, is the process shared by QM systems and CME that is used to identify problems, develop solutions, implement solutions, and measure results. The purpose of this article is to help those in CME look at ways that QM systems and CME can collaborate effectively, resulting in positive changes for physician learners and their patients.

Keywords: Behavior changes; collaboration; continuing medical education; quality management; systems
