Creating Change Through Partnership: Developing Continuing Education Resources in Rural Areas
Gwen D. Sherwood, PhD, RN

A b s t r a c t

Local nursing leaders were presented with a dilemma by believing that education is a stimulus for change in the light of the restricted resources experienced by a rural, underserved remote area of Texas. To confront the shortage of educational development opportunities for nurses, representatives from the Lower Rio Grande Valley and The University of Texas-Houston School of Nursing seized advantage of the political climate to create an educational partnership. Together, leaders championed the need to develop a cadre of nurses skilled in providing on-site continuing education, while updating knowledge and skill of professional nurses. Thus, by creating change through partnership, a new culture of collegiality became the energizing force for professional nursing in this geographically remote area. With an attitude of inclusion and, working together for a common shared goal, a model for maintaining continuing education in the 90's emerged.
