Regional Electronic Bulletin Board System: Three Years of Experience with Continuing Medical Education

An electronic bulletin board system was established to enhance communication among the Chiefs of Professional Education of the Kaiser Permanente Medical Care Program, Northern California Region. Initial growth in participation was rapid but reached a plateau at 10% of the total physician group. Further expansion was slowed by limited equipment availability, physicians' lack of familiarity with the benefits and requirements of the technology, and perceived lack of real utility due to reluctance to transact business by this new system. Technological innovation in information management may take several years to penetrate corporate culture.
