Health Promotion Among Minority Aged: Challenges for the Health Professions
Rosalie F. Young, PhD

A b s t r a c t

Health professionals have few educational opportunities that focus on older racial and ethnic minorities, especially with regard to disease prevention and health promotion. This paper describes some of the existing barriers to the provision of health promotion services to minority aged. It offers a plan for the education of medical professionals who seek the issues involved. The paper also details reasons for offering and targeting health promotion activities to special populations. It presents specific strategies to accomplish these goals for health professionals dealing with heart disease and/or diabetes. In addition, the paper describes a new model health promotion that emphasizes the role of communication strategies. Finally, it presents the rationale and objectives for a specific continuing education program.
