Physical Therapy Continuing Education Part II: Motivating Factors

A b s t r a c t
Motivation is the causal factor, the mediator, and the consequence of learning. This study reports on the motivational orientations of physical therapists in Georgia for obtaining continuing education. Therapists had a Knowledge Goal Orientation for interest in seeking programs. Meeting continuing education requirements for relicensure was a secondary motivation for therapists interest in continuing education. Therapists viewed continuing education as a means of advancing in present jobs instead of as a means of obtaining new jobs. The more interest a therapist had in a topic, the fewer number of motivational orientations associated with the topic. The motivational orientations of physical therapists for obtaining continuing education are similar to those of other health professionals but differ from those of the general adult population.
