CASE REPORT
The OSCME (Opportunity for Self-Assessment CME)
Jennifer L. Craig, PhD
A b s t r a c t
As active involvement is crucial for learning to occur, this Continuing Medical Education (CME) Day was organized around this principle. Based on the idea of the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), "stations" were designed to allow participants to meet specified learning objectives. Twenty-seven family practitioners rotated through eight stations each taking 15 minutes or multiples of 15 minutes to complete. At the eight stations participants audited their own charts, applied two casts, discussed a case, performed four eye procedures, interviewed simulated patients, answered a quiz, interpreted ECG strips and diagnosed skin disorders from slides. Twelve participants submitted scores obtained at the stations and these indicated a high degree of competence. The lowest scores were on reading ECGs. Of 21 respondents, 17 rated their learning and enjoyment as higher than usual for CME events and 4 rated it "about the same". Certain aspects of this workshop could be incorporated into any CME event.
