PHARMACY
A Pharmacy Consortium: Producing Resources for Continuing Education

A b s t r a c t
With the rapid movement of pharmacy practice toward a greater clinical orientation, many baccalaureate-prepared pharmacists found themselves without the necessary preparation for this new level of practice. Through their professional organizations, they called on colleges of pharmacy to offer the Doctor of Pharmacy degree in a nontraditional format so that they could continue their education without having to leave their practice settings. Recognizing that adequate resources were not available within any individual college to produce all of the resources needed, two consortia were formed by colleges and later merged into one under the auspices of the American Association of Colleges and Pharmacy. Drawing from past experience s with consortial function, the new consortium organized itself to produce educational resources in a manner that would allow faculty to accept and use the resources without the concerns that have traditionally inhibited their use. Four courses were identified that would provide the didactic component for the degree requirements. Two courses are in use with two additional courses yet to be developed. The future of the consortium will depend on experience gained with the use of these resources and on the need for additional resource production.
