FROM THE ACME CONFERENCE
Dave Davis, MD A b s t r a c t A key conference bringing together physicians, educators, peer review professionals, and representatives of professional associations and licensing bodies is summarized and its content and outcomes highlighted. Held in San Francisco in January1989, the meeting's major goal was an analysis of the current activities of and steps involved in an area variously described as "focused, prescribed, or remedial medical education." Speakers addressed the topic from their perspective of responsibility and expertise, discussing, for example, the current role of the American Medical Association (AMA), peer review organization, and state licensing bodies. Small group workshops focused on the "bow" of the process, teasing apart the ingredients of competence and developing a working model of competence assessment and responsibilities. This comprises several components, including screening for discompetence; identification of problem physicians; specific learning and practice needs assessment; design of the remedial experience; and development, delivery, and evaluation of the reductional intervention. More effort yet is required to flesh out this topic and develop workable strategies. Future conferences will address this need. Keywords: Remedial; medical, educational; peer review; CME |
