PHARMACY
CE Activity Patterns Among Kentucky Pharmacists: 1985-1987
Michael C. Shannon, PhD
A b s t r a c t
This study reports on the CE activity of Kentucky pharmacists over a three-year period, 1985 to 1987. Data were obtained from the actual CE certificates submitted to the Kentucky Board of Pharmacy by pharmacists audited by the board as part of their relicensure process. The CE records for 300 pharmacists were examined for each year of the study period. The chi-square statistic revealed no significant differences between sex, geographic location, total number of programs reported, or total hours of CE reported when compared across the three years studied. The results show Kentucky pharmacists participated in six educational programs yearly on average and earned more hours of CE credit than the minimum requirement of 15 contact hours. These pharmacists had a preference for the home study format, accounting for nearly three-quarters of the programs used in 1985 and 1986 and over 80% in 1987. The majority of providers whose programs were used were ACPE-approved providers. Overall, Kentucky pharmacists used a wide variety of CE programs offered by a large number of different providers to meet their relicensure requirements.
