In the fall of 1986, Extension Services in Pharmacy at the University of Wisconsin presented an eight-lecture teleconference course entitled, "Therapy of Infectious Disease." A study was undertaken to evaluate this teleconference series as a method for the continuing education of pharmacists. Specific objectives were to evaluate: 1) satisfaction with the delivery system; 2) cognitive changes as a result of participation in the program; and 3) the application of knowledge gained to the pharmacist's practice setting. Overall, the study participants were satisfied with ETN as a method of continuing pharmaceutical education. Cognitive test results showed a significant improvement in the level of performance. Results evaluating the application of the knowledge gained from the teleconference course were test conclusive. There was a trend towards improvement in scores from presimulation to postsimulation. The improvement, however, was not statistically significant.
